As you may or may not know, the Mars Polar Lander has finally
set down on Mars,  and equipped to it is a $100,000 microphone
designed to pick up the faintest of silence on the red planet.
Apparently the microphone's sponsors didn't realize that radio
shack still sells microphones for less than a hundred dollars.
Nevertheless,    we here have caught the first of non-Earthly 
sounds ever recorded in history.
